RiShon Odel – Loosing My Religion

Bassman RiShon Odel is perhaps one of the most creative talents in this era. Having recently enjoyed the title of #1 ON BILLBOARD SMOOTH JAZZ CHART, for his writing on both “XX” (Brian Culbertson) & “You, Me & Forever” (Grammy Award nominee NAJEE).

While still pursuing a Music Education degree at a SUNY College, Odel burst onto the music scene in 2006 with an arco bass piece performed at the opening of the JoAnn Faletta International Guitar Competition alongside the Buffalo Select Chorus. Having authored his first instructional Book of Bass Volume 1 (Dorrance Publishing), and conducted his first orchestra in 2009, Odel composed music for the Eastman String Quartet, Buffalo State College Symphonic Band and The Ieda String Ensemble; which he used to score the film Less Than Perfect, produced by film legend Reuben Santiago.

When he is not touring or composing, he conducts workshops and clinics throughout the U. S., Canada and other territories. His teaching record consists of vocal and instrumental students that have gone on to Howard University, Berklee College of Music, Buffalo State College, Michigan State, and more.

Odel delivers his uptempo new single “Loosing My Religion,” a fresh new composition destined to be every festival goer’s party anthem. “Loosing My Religion” is a fine blend of DC Funk, Jazz & Soul.

Slim Gambill – Turn The Corner

Slim Gambill cover art (1)

Nashville-based guitarist Slim Gambill releases his infectious new single “Turn The Corner.” This swagger-drenched tune, saturated in a plush 70’s retro vibe, was co-written by Gambill and Adam Hawley, and produced by Hawley. The new collaboration extends the duo’s run following the 4-week Billboard #1 Smooth Jazz track, “Light This Candle.” Plans are underway for an entire album of new material. The new track is a lively, groove-filled fusion of pop, silky R&B and of course guitar-driven jazz.

With “Turn The Corner” Gambill elevates the excitement by adding in a funky horn section supporting his contagious melodies, reminiscent of George Benson or Bob James’s slickest offerings. Gambill said, “As a writer, you come up with melodies constantly. Some of them are pretty good, a handful are great, most of them REALLY aren’t! But when I came up with the hook for “Turn The Corner,” I felt like I had something that was undeniable that would get stuck in people’s heads.” He continues, ”Then Adam did what he does and took it to the next level and made such a fun track. I immediately felt that the cut reflected the energy of classic feel good music–like 70’sMichael Jackson and Curtis Mayfield crossed with the CHIPs theme!”

The Nebraska-born, Colorado-raised guitarist is likely best known for his 17+ years of working with country hitmakers Lady A, a key adjunct in the trio’s rise to multi-platinum, award-winning fame thanks to his hot licks and his trademark two-foot-long braids. The gifted performer and in-demand sideman draws from a deep musical well, and his recent albums and the music that’s yet to come, showcase the work of a well-tuned musician with endless musical curiosity and no boundaries on his ambitions or imagination. “I love sideman-land, and it’s been good to me, but at some point it’s great to put your own music out, sort of scratch that creative itch,” says Gambill. “Jazz, Blues and Classic Rock are what got me obsessed with guitar in the first place, so this project is circling back around to where I started. It’s an amazing outlet I haven’t had for a long time, where I can pretty much do whatever comes out.”

After releasing several of his own singles to acclaim and achieving top spots on the Smooth Jazz Radio charts, Gambill knew it was time to mix things up. As Jimmy Iovine put it (referring to his legendary stint producing Tom Petty), “After three albums, you should fire your producer!” So, as the story goes, for his next project, Gambill decided to relinquish the captain’s chair and put his music in the hands of the hottest producer/writer/artist in Smooth Jazz, Adam Hawley.

Upon being connected by mutual friend, the great jazz saxophonist/vocalist Mindi Abair, the two guitar slingers immediately hit it off and decided to make music together. “My last tune I titled “Light This Candle” because I hoped it would “ignite” my career in this format–and it certainly did. With this new cut, I feel as though I’m literally turning a corner in my career.“ Gambill continues, “My main gig for 17 years has been with Lady A. I’m still their guitarist and bandleader, but this happens to be a pretty mellow year for us and that has opened the door for me to really dig in on my own projects. Add to that the fact that my kids have gotten a lot more independent and, well, everything has been changing a lot lately, so I’m kind of turning a corner in my life as well. Not in a bad way, just in the way that life ebbs and flows. Thus, “Turn The Corner.” I truly couldn’t be more excited to turn this corner and see what’s up ahead.” In addition to Gambill on lead and rhythm guitar and Hawley on keys, bass and programming, the crew includes horn arrangements and performance by David Mann, additional synths from Carnell Harrell and Eric Valentine on drums.

Walter Kittle – Absolute Love

Walter Kittle Absolute Love cover art

Walter Kittle is delighted to announce his new single, “Absolute Love” scheduled for release on May 10th. It’s the second time that Walter has teamed up with Smooth Jazz artist, guitarist, and producer NILS. “Working with Gerald Albright and Brian Bromberg on this project is a dream come true. These musical giants have been immense influences on me and my music. I’ve always loved Gerald’s iconic sax sound and distinctive style of playing. Brian, on the other hand, is personally responsible for my transition to solo (Piccolo) Bass guitar.”

Kittle, who also wrote the song, extends his mastery to a unique sonic palette in urban jazz. He achieves this through a diverse arsenal of instruments, which includes the piccolo bass, five-string bass, fretlessbass, and his own custom eight-string bass. “At the heart of his new single lies his wife Robin Bleier. ‘She is my partner and my muse,’ he explains, ‘I could never reach this level of musicianship without her undying love and support.’”

In a move that truly “pulled out all the stops,” Walter and Robin, who also executive produced the single, collaborated with some of Los Angeles finest musicians. “Absolute Love” features GERALD ALBRIGHT on sax, BRIAN BROMBERG on upright bass, CORY MASON on drums, MITCH FORMAN on piano, and Oliver C. Brown on percussion, with NILS layering his signature rhythm fills, which are cleverly woven into the fabric of the song, and ROBIN BLEIER’S enchanting flute harmonies adding the finishing touch.

John Klemmer – Islands in the Sun

John Klemmer album cover

On April 26, the first new album by contemporary jazz saxophone innovator John Klemmer, “Chateau Love,” was released by Touch Records USA/BFD/Orchard. Klemmer composed and produced a dozen new tracks for the intimate and soothing collection that generously clocks in at more than an hour of music.

Some consider Klemmer enigmatic, and he has been reclusive from the recording scene in recent years, not having issued an album since 1998’s “Making Love, Vol. 1.” Being ensconced in the quiet fortress of his Los Angeles home away from the limelight influences “Chateau Love,” which features Klemmer playing tenor and soprano saxophone along with synth, piano and vocal contributions. The new album marks a welcome return. Klemmer’s sensual grooves, ambient jazz vibe and subtle melodies were crafted to create a feeling and an experience aswell as to share his personal journey.

“‘Chateau Love’ is a place. It may be real, imagined or a concept that you can go to. It can beanywhere, or it can be your own invention. It’s your place for seclusion, intimacy, relaxation or romance. Each song/track is an expression and experience of my own personal yet universal journey to ‘Chateau Love,’” said Klemmer, who is known for pioneering the imaginative sonic effects he used on his saxophones.

Klemmer recorded “Chateau Love” live in the company of a legendary rhythm section comprised of bassist Abe Laboriel Sr., drummer Harvey Mason Sr. and percussionist Lenny Castro. Adding to the warm and enveloping harmonic backdrop are Ronnie Foster’s soulful keyboards and piano, and John Tropea’s chill electric and gentle acoustic guitars. However, it’s Klemmer’s horn play that stands stridently in the spotlight of each track – expressive and emotional without overplaying or being overwrought, connecting and communicative while maintaining a cool and collected demeanor, and intensely impassioned with a compassionate caress.

The first radio single “Islands in the Sun” shines through the grace of Darlene Koldenhoven’s reassuring vocal hook on the tune that Klemmer calls “the zenith journey of the ‘Chateau Love’ concept.”

Julian Vaughn – Kiss The Groove

Julian Vaughn cover art (2) (1)

Hot on the heels of 2022’s album title “SOLO,” Kansas City bassist Julian Vaughn returns with his new single “Kiss the Groove.” It’s the first release from his forthcoming album due out mid-summer. “Kiss the Groove” is a song that features Julian Vaughn himself not only as an artist, but as a producer as well.

During the winter in early 2024, Julian recorded the new single “Kiss the Groove” at his home studio. An idea that started with a bassline quickly formed into an entire song with a sweet intro, catchy hook and smooth bridge. Like it’s predecessor, “Kiss the Groove” demonstrates Julian’s seemingly effortless ability to nail the unique vibes of the single. This album is graced with beautiful guitars, strong horn section, keys that layer the song like icing on a cake, and most importantly a strong bassline that has the potential to become iconic.

Reggie Codrington – Three Shades Of Blue

ThreeShadesOfBlue

There would be no music career for soprano saxophonist Reggie Codrington had it not been for his father, trumpeter Ray Codrington. Born with Ataxic Cerebral Palsy that required nine major surgeries even before the saxman was a teenager, Ray found a small, curved saxophone that made it physically possible for Reggie to play the instrument. After Ray succumbed to Alzheimer’s disease last May, Reggie decided to pay tribute by recording one of his father’s favorite compositions, “Three Shades of Blue,” a song that Ray wrote and performed in his live sets, but never recorded. The urban-jazz single produced by Phil Davis (Boney James, Alex Bugnon, Al Jarreau) is now collecting radio airplay and Spotify spins.

Ray Codrington was a professional musician who played with Little Richard, Gladys Knight and Jackie Wilson. His son was ten years-old when the trumpeter composed “Three Shades of Blue.” Reggie remembers seeing his father perform the song with the North Carolina Symphony. A prolific composer, recording “Three Shades of Blue” was one of Ray’s long-held desires, which was unfinished business upon his passing. He left a wealth of original music that he never got around to recording. Reggie has made recording music from his father’s songbook a personal mission, honoring his father’s legacy by creating “The Ray Codrington Signature Series.” “Three Shades of Blue” is the first single from the forthcoming collection.

“Seeing the joy on my father’s face when he performed this song provoked the desire for me to record it. My father penned a lot of music, but ‘Three Shades of Blue’ was significant because it was a schematic of his life. After his earthly transition, this song became a signature selection in my heart. He told me that this song explained the various transitions his life encountered. I was able to embody this song by looking at my life and determining from birth to now, that my life has been the epitome of ‘Three Shades of Blue,’” said Reggie Codrington, who is based in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

Davis crafted the ethereal groove by playing all the instruments surrounding Reggie’s poignant melodic soprano sax phrases and heartfelt solo, the latter to which the producer responds by issuing an elegant piano solo.

After studying music at Howard University, Reggie Codrington debuted in 1990 with “Never Let You Go,” the first of eleven albums released to date. Throughout the years, Ray maintained a regular presence at Reggie’s recording sessions, including during the tracking of last year’s “Light,” Reggie’s single that peaked at No. 32 on the Billboard chart. Although Ray wasn’t physically present during the “Three Shades of Blue” recording date, Reggie felt his father’s presence.

“Feeling Dad’s presence in the studio caused me to reflect on when he would be beside me while recording. Recording my part was melodic, smooth, and colorful. As I experienced the presence of my father in the studio booth with me, my solo became a symphonic conversation between my father and me. I could hear him playing his horn licks and making his musical suggestions. After one of my recording takes, my studio engineer, Andy Pow, allowed me to hear the playback. Previously, my father would be the one writing out notes for me to play and providing creative ideas for me to try, in hopes of creating a musical experience for the listener. I took that exchange with Andy and reworked a portion of my solo realizing that my father was still giving me his insight through others in the studio,” shared Reggie, who has performed for President Barak Obama, recorded with Jeff Lorber, Paul Jackson Jr. and Nils; and opened for Ramsey Lewis, Charlie Wilson, Frankie Beverly & Maze, Peabo Bryson, Kenny Latimore, Kim Waters and Kevin Toney.

There’s a lot of Ray’s music for Reggie to sift through as he curates and records “The Ray Codrington Signature Series” over the next year or two. Reggie Codrington is excited about preserving his father’s works while introducing his father’s music to new audiences, beginning with “Three Shades of Blue.”

“Funny to note, I never knew how much blue was in my closet until I recorded this song,” Reggie said ebulliently.

Jeff Logan – Chill Factor

Jeff Logan album cover

Fire & Ice congratulates Jeff Logan on his upcoming Smooth Jazz full album/cd release “INDIGO”.

The first single, “CHILL FACTOR”, is scheduled for an April 2024 spring release, and featured, on the single is the superlatively incomparable Paul Brown!

Jeff Logan, a native of the Washington, DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia area, better known as the DMV, is a gifted artist and multi-instrumentalist (bass, guitar, percussion, keyboards). He has been a public safety administrator, by day, but he is segueing to a full-time committed artist, beyond the night.

Logan is an accomplished composer, and he writes music in several genres (Contemporary Gospel, R&B, and Smooth Jazz, and Soundtrack). His latest release, “INDIGO”, showcases 10 of his own original compositions written in the Smooth Jazz format. But these musical gems are more than just SJ tracks because one can hear and discern that Jeff has seamlessly blended and infused several gospel and R&B elements and other musical influences throughout the entire project.

Speaking of infusion, Jeff had routinely produced all his projects while performing all the instruments and vocals himself. But, Jeff decided to seek out a producer for this project. The Quincy Jones of Smooth Jazz production, the incomparable Paul Brown (who is the gold standard and top-shelf producer extraordinaire), produced all 10 songs. It’s Jeff’s first collaboration with Paul as Jeff’s producer, with a venerable who’s who of some of the best world-renown musicians and artists performing with Jeff.

And if that wasn’t enough, Paul, along with Shane Theriot, also collaborated with Jeff to pen two of the songs. The three formed a tandem and cowrote “If Only” and “Fall in Love”.

The collaboration between Jeff and Paul has created ear candy for the ages. Take a listen for yourself and we’re certain you will be teleported and swept away into the magic, the melodies, and the smooth moods and grooves that emanate a neo-indigo sonic flow, from start to finish.

Mr. Horn – I’ll Be There For You

Mr Horn I'll Be There For You cover art

Keyboardist Darren Horn started performing professionally as a teenager in Detroit with singer Cortez Harris, who was a member of popular R&B/funk band Al Hudson & One Way.

He and Cortez hit it off after Horn, whose aunt lived across the street from where the band was rehearsing, took the initiative to start jamming with them. After a time playing with Cortez at major clubs like The Twenty Grand, the keyboardist hooked up with The Axe Band, which was renowned as singer Cherelle’s backing band and toured with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis.

Horn later played keys and acted as road manager for Kiara, which scored a #2 on Billboard R&B chart a duet with Shanice Wilson on Arista Records, and opened for everyone from Gerald Albright to Whitney Houston and Luther Vandross; they also created pop crossover remixes for saxophonist Marion Meadows and worked for a time with Toni Braxton just as she was about to emerge.

Horn is releasing The Horn Connection EP on the heels of his 2022 debut album Summertime, whose popular, vocal-driven title track single was played on Smooth Jazz and soft rock radio and internet stations throughout the U.S. and Europe.

Jeff “Skunk” Baxter – Do It Again

Jeff Skunk Baxter Do It Again cover art

Unquestionably one of the rock/pop world’s leading guitarists, Jeff “Skunk” Baxter also has a life story so unusual it recalls the title of Alton Delmore’s autobiography, “Truth is Stranger Than Publicity.”

Born in Washington D.C., but raised partly in Mexico City, partly in a Connecticut prep school and partly in late ’60s Boston, Baxter was delivering amps to a session in New York City when the guitarist didn’t arrive. He grabbed a guitar then and thus, at age 16 began a recording career that has spanned over 55 years and continues to this day.

After stints with Tim Buckley, The Holy Modal Rounders and Ultimate Spinach, in 1972 he attracted his first notoriety, as a founding member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inducted Steely Dan, delivering scintillating and sizzling guitar licks to such legendary tracks as “Do It Again”, “My Old School” and “Rikki, Don’t Lose That Number.”

He joined the Hall of Fame inductees The Doobie Brothers in 1974, later bringing Michael McDonald to the band and helping that group craft such enduring treasures as “Takin’ It To The Streets”, “It Keeps You Runnin'” and “What A Fool Believes”.

During the ‘70s, ’80s, ’90s and 2000+, he continued his high-level session work, contributing key guitar and pedal steel work to recording projects by Ringo Starr, Joni Mitchell, Bryan Adams, Freddie Hubbard, John Cougar Mellencamp, Cher, Rod Stewart, Roy Orbison, Dolly Parton, Julio Iglesias, Barbara Streisand, Harry Nilsson, Gene Simmons, Elton John, Carly Simon, Donna Summer, The Ventures, Edgar Winter and The Beach Boys, (to name a few), as well as touring with Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers, Julian Lennon and Linda Ronstadt.

As producer, he can count projects with artists like Carl Wilson, Nazareth, Billy & The Beaters, (#1 single “At This Moment”), Nils Lofgrin and the Stray Cats among his accomplishments.

As a composer, he co-wrote and produced the original theme for “Beverly Hills 90210”, as well as composing, performing and producing score for a number of TV and movie projects including “King of the Hill”, “Class of 1984”, (with Lalo Schifrin), “Roxanne” and “Bull Durham.”

He composed and produced jingles for a number of major brands, including Wrangler Jeans, Johnny Walker, Motorola, Southern Comfort and Mitsubishi Audio Products and performed as a session musician for countless others.

In 2022 he achieved on of those life goals and released his first solo recording “Speed of Heat”. His first tour as band leader took place in the Spring and Summer of 2022 was successful and he was invited to perform in Japan in August of that year. On “Speed of Heat” he sings (a rare occurence) on the Steely Dan staple “My Old School”, which makes sense since he used to do the vocals when Steely Dan did live shows. Guest voaclists and writers include Michael McDonald (My Place In The Sun), Clint Black (Bad Move) and Johnny Lang (I Can Do Without).

Through all this he has earned numerous Gold and Platinum albums, two Grammys and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2020, in the process. He was also a consultant with AKAI Digital as their Senior Technical Advisor, and held consulting positions with Gibson, Bedell Guitars, Fender, Epiphone, Audio-Technica, D’Angelico Guitars and has been with Roland Corp for over 40 years, involved in on-going design/consulting work on numerous Roland and Boss products including the first commercially successful Guitar Synthesizer and its progeny. He continues to pursue his career as a guitarist, producer, engineer, composer and technical consultant and has no intention of slowing down.

With his unwavering trust in God’s plan, he embarked on a remarkable journey that would not only prove his skeptics wrong, but also inspire countless others along the way. “Meant 2 Be” is a musical testimony of his journey. From the very uplifting lyrics of the title track, “Meant 2 Be” to the funky horn sections and grooves of “Glorious,” the EP is a masterclass in combining the elements of Gospel music and Contemporary Jazz.

“This is different than anything I’ve done before. Though all of my music has some gospel elements; with this one we didn’t hold back,” said Godber. “Meant 2 Be” is available on all major streaming platforms.

Ilya Serov – Glow

ILYA SEROV cover art

Award-winning trumpeter /singer /guitarist /band leader Ilya Serov has a passion for jazz that knows no bounds. A talented young musician with an old soul, Ilya brings an infusion of imagination, vision and energy to the many shades of America’s original musical art form. Possessing both chops and charisma, his live performances and recordings have attracted a solid following among jazz fans and seasoned musicians alike.

Ilya first encountered jazz as a teen, exchanging tapes and records with fellow musicians. His earliest jazz influences were Arturo Sandoval, Chet Baker, Miles Davis, Frank Sinatra and Nat “King” Cole, and he eventually incorporated their sounds and vocal stylings into his own music.

When not on stage, Ilya spends his time in the recording studio. His debut album, September in the Rain (2013), was a Big Band outing of classic jazz standards that highlighted both his horn and vocal skills. That album was followed by the release of Back in Time (2018), featuring classic tunes and instrumental collaborations with legendary pianist Roger Kellaway, and acclaimed saxophonist Eric Marienthal, and GRAMMY®-winning percussionist Poncho Sanchez.

“Ilya is a great, great trumpet player and I love his voice,” said Sanchez. “He has a great thing here because it’s commercial enough for the mainstream to enjoy, but hip enough for the jazz folks to like. He can sing the tunes and play them; that’s the edge he’s got.”

After hearing Serov perform, Dave Koz invited him to be a guest artist on his popular Dave Koz and Friends at Sea Jazz Cruise. From 2017 – 2019 he played on cruises throughout Europe and Australia with Koz and other Smooth Jazz greats, sharing the stage with the likes of Jonathan Butler, David Benoit, Larry Graham, Peter White and BeBe Winans. Ilya will again be a featured guest artist on Dave Koz & Friends in Amsterdam and the British Isles in May 2022.

Ilya Serov is driven today not only by his desire to preserve jazz as an American treasure, but by his mission to engage and educate new generations of listeners. He continues to focus exclusively on contributing his time and talent to the world of jazz – its past, present and future.

Serov’s new single “Glow” is mixed and produced by Adam Hawley.

Patrick Bradley – Road Trippin’

RoadTrippin

The kids are grown, living on their own, and there’s a fifth wheel parked in the driveaway. Relishing the freedom to hit the road to explore and take in nature is the inspiration for jazz fusion keyboardist Patrick Bradley’s new single, “Road Trippin’, which will begin collecting radio playlist adds and Spotify spins on March 11. Bradley wrote the song with 26-time Billboard chart-topper Darren Rahn, a multiple Grammy nominated producer, songwriter and saxophonist. Rahn produced the single previewing Bradley’s “Gratitude” album, which is slated to arrive later this year from the Patrick’s Song Factory label.

Beyond their shared musical connection, Bradley and Rahn are bonded by their devotion to their Christian faith. Blessed with a grateful heart, Bradley is thoroughly enjoying this chapter in his life after having raised two children. He and his wife of forty years, Lisa, decided to get the fifth wheel so they could travel freely and easily, enabling them to spend more time on their own in serene scenic outdoor settings. You can hear the sense of adventure on the rousing groove anchored by Rahn and Grammy-winning bassist Mel Brown on “Road Trippin’.” One can almost see the fifth wheel motoring along the open road against a majestic backdrop as Bradley’s piano issues melodic flourishes. Rahn texturizes the track with energizing harmonies via his Wurlitzer, synths and programming. Further embellishments come in the form of Joel Del Rosario’s funky guitar riffs, which are dispensed liberally throughout the cut.

“The inspiration of the song is really celebrating the freedom and the joys of a road trip. Ever since Lisa and I purchased the fifth wheel a couple of years ago, we’ve been enjoying the outdoors. We’re grateful to have the opportunity at this time in our lives when we have both the freedom and the means available to get out there. For us, it’s about exploring new destinations and visiting cherished places while enjoying the beauty of God’s creation,” said the Southern California-based Bradley, who will perform on July 28 at Spaghettini south of Los Angeles.

“Road Trippin’” provides a glimpse into what’s in store on Bradley’s upcoming sixth album, “Gratitude.” It’s his first outing since 2021’s “Exhale” album, which spawned four Billboard top 20 singles, including the title track that went No. 1 and the top 10 single, “Completely Yours.” Rahn was a big part of that project as was Grammy-winning jazz fusion keyboardist Jeff Lorber, a longtime collaborator who cowrote and produced two songs on the album after producing several of Bradley’s earlier albums. Bradley debuted in 2006 with the “Come Rain or Shine” album. Over the years, he’s collaborated with Grammy nominated saxophonists Dave Koz and Eric Marienthal, Billboard hitmakers Rick Braun and Adam Hawley, and legendary guitarist Paul Jackson Jr. (Michael Jackson, Natalie Cole, Luther Vandross, George Benson).

Terry Wollman – Hipster

Terry Wollman Hipster cover art

Terry Wollman is a Billboard charting American Jazz/Pop musician. He is a music director, guitarist, producer, arranger, and composer currently living in Los Angeles. Wollman has released nine albums including Bimini (1988), Say Yes (1998), Baila (2000), Sleep Suite (2004), Buddha’s Ear (2011), A Joyful Noise (2012), Silver Collection (2014), Cassini’s Last Dance (2020), and Surface (2023). His radio hit “What Is Hip?” (2022) debuted #1 Most Added on Billboard and spent four months on the charts.

“‘Hipster’ was inspired by a conversation I had with my friend Najee. We first performed together on TV in the early 90’s and years later reunited on stage to perform my song ‘Mandela,’ leading us to decide to record together.

During the pandemic, I invited Najee to record remotely and play on my Surface album. To my surprise, he asked to play flute. Seizing the inspiration, I wrote “Hipster,” which became one of my favorite cuts.

Fun fact: There are no drums on the song! Instead, we feature legendary percussionist Luis Conte.” – Terry Wollman

Byron Miller – Stride

Byron Miller cover art

In 1966, Jazz legend Julian “Cannonball” Adderley famously stated, “Sometimes we are not prepared for adversity – Mercy, Mercy, Mercy.” In 2002, Gospel great Donnie McClurkin added, “We Fall Down (But We Get Up).” Within that world class trajectory, modern electric bass master Byron Miller delivers the single “Stride (Granby Hills),” literally taking the trials of life into his phenomenal fingers, administering all the healing his music can bring then giving the rest to God so He can work The Master Plan.

“Stride (Granby Hills),” co-composed and co-produced by Miller and his current ace collaborator Chris “Big Dog” Davis, is the third single leading to the fourth chapter of Byron’s acclaimed PsychoBass series, PsychoBass 4: Motor City Love, slated for a summer of 2024 release.

“Stride (Granby Hills)” is a feel-good song with a breezy swing that is perfect for radio, created to bring a lift to people’s spirits when they hear it. Davis sent an early version if the song to Miller, expressing that he wrote it to inspire himself as he was battling cancer…an illness he triumphantly beat. Miller added his signature electric bass sound to the piece creating yet another winning instrumental from the duo for the world of Contemporary Jazz. Simplicity and space – via the elements of ambient flute and keyboard textures – are the keys to the song’s healing power of refreshed reviviscence in a state of divine gratitude. Miller’s bass adds the sanctified Hallelujah vibration. The parenthetical title, Granby Hills, alludes to the place in Connecticut where Davis lives and rehabilitated his health.

Miller already whetted the appetites of the masses with two earlier teaser singles: the lowdown low-end theory jam, “Say it Ain’t Good to Ya,” and the sun-kissed “To The Floor” – both collaborations with multi-instrumentalist Chris “Big Dog” Davis. The next courses will include a surprise cover of a female Soul-Pop icon’s super sexy song from the `90s as well as the title track, “Motor City Love,” showing unwavering support for Detroit as only PsychoBass can bring it.

Even more exciting: Byron ‘PsychoBass’ Miller – alumnus of George Duke, Roy Ayers, Luther Vandross and Marvin Gaye – returns to solo performing in 2024. Fans have waited decades for Byron to bring his spaceship and MTB line of electric basses to intimate club stages, Jazz AND Funk festivals, and cruise ships around the planet. Let the healin’ feelin’ begin…PLAY!

Jimmy B – My Old Street

MyoldStreet

Mixing nostalgic memories from childhood when he discovered his passion for music and honoring his siblings’ strength and his mother’s courage are the inspiration for R&B/jazz guitarist Jimmy B’s newly released single, “My Old Street.” The follow-up to his first Billboard No. 1 single, “It’s Personal” featuring 9-time Grammy nominee Gerald Albright, “My Old Street” was written and produced by Kerry Wilkins. The WKM Records single was one of the most added new singles on the Billboard/Mediabase chart in its debut week of release.

Jimmy B is an instrumental storyteller, using his lyrically expressive guitar-play to tell tales chronicling his youth, family life and seminal moments. “My Old Street” pays tribute to formative lessons he learned from his siblings. His 2018 album, “I’m Still Standing,” reflects the tenacity and persistence that his family exemplified. The new track, which features Wilkins on rhythm guitar and a piano solo by Ted Wenglinski that illuminates the soulful midtempo groove, is an uplifting lesson about the strength and courage instilled in all of his siblings.

“My mother had towering strength and courage. Whenever she faced adversity, she did so head on. She stood up and made a change for our family,” explained Jimmy B, recalling when his older siblings orchestrated his mother to move them into a much better neighborhood in Canton, Ohio when the guitarist was ten.

“On the particular street she moved us to is where I first embraced my love of music, making me who I am today,” said Jimmy B, who now resides in Houston.

Jimmy B debuted in 2010 with “Just The Way I Feel.” He collaborated with Grammy nominated saxophonist/flutist Najee and Emmy nominated urban-jazz pianist Bobby Lyle. On stage, Jimmy B has shared the spotlight with R&B/soul singer Glenn Jones, sophisticated soul singer Phil Perry, and R&B crooner Eddie Levert of The O’Jays. “My Old Street” will appear on “Jimmy B & Friends Two,” his fifth album, which he expects to release in April.

Many of the people in Jimmy B’s life try to guess what street “My Old Street” is about. He is amused about the intrigue and speculation, but he declines to reveal the exact street name in order to keep the focus on the song’s broader message.

“Many people from my hometown think they know which street I’m referring to, but let it be known, it is still a mystery and I’m going to keep it that way because which street is not really important. Everyone can relate to ‘My Old Street’ because everyone has a past and a journey to get to the street that they are on now.”

Robby Krieger and The Soul Savages – A Day in L.A.

Robby Krieger cover art

Robby Krieger and The Soul Savages released their debut studio album via The Players Club / Mascot Label Group on January 19, 2024. Today, they present the lead reveal with the visualizer for “A Day in L.A.”

Robby Krieger knows that when you assemble the right bunch of musicians, and trust in the creative process, magic happens. As a founding member of The Doors, the guitarist intuitively understands the beauty of free-flowing collaboration and telepathic group interplay. This is evident on Robby’s self-titled debut release from his new band, Robby Krieger And The Soul Savages.

Robby Krieger And The Soul Savages was recorded old school style with a bunch of friends jamming and recording in a relaxed studio setting. Tracked at Robby’s own Love Street Studios in Glendale, California, it finds Robby stretching out over cinematic groove music inspired by classic soul, 1960s jazz, blues, rock, psychedelic rock, and beyond.

“I’ve had this studio for the last six or seven years, and it’s really made me branch out as a musician,” Robby says. “We wrote together, and soul music became a big part of this album. These guys are world-class players—they’ve worked with Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Kahn, Lenny Kravitz—they have that great groove pedigree.”

Robby is a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and he is listed by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. He wrote or co-wrote many of The Doors’ most enduring compositions, including “Light My Fire,” “Love Me Two Times,” “Touch Me,” and “Love Her Madly.” Since the 1970s, Robby has emerged a successful jazz-fusion guitarist with a well-received catalog of solo albums, including the Grammy-nominated record, Singularity. Robby has also stayed active jamming with artists such as Gov’t Mule and Alice In Chains. Recently, he released the revealing memoir, Set the Night on Fire: Living, Dying, and Playing Guitar With the Doors.

Fans of the guitarist’s singular style will rejoice that his latest album is filled with Robby-isms. Robby Krieger And The Soul Savages brims with his celebrated fingerstyle fretwork, including Robby’s adventurous jazzy and microtonal slide guitar playing; his slinky, funk-inspired rhythm work; and his silky Wes Montgomery-style octave playing. The 10-song album explores the soul-jazz, dirty blues, and noir-ish roots of The Doors while also furthering Robby’s career as a jazz-fusion guitarist.

“This band inspired a style of playing I hadn’t done in a while, and it also inspired me to do new things. For example, in the past, I reserved my slide playing for more of the bluesy stuff, but I stretched out on the album playing slide over jazz, funk, and soul grooves. I want to keep evolving, and these guys really inspire me.”

Joining Robby on this all-instrumental odyssey of psych-rock soul are top-shelf composers, instrumentalists, and bandmates. Bassist-songwriter Kevin “Brandino” Brandon co-wrote and recorded with Robby on the Singularity album, and he has won over half a dozen Grammy awards as well as three Emmy awards. His extensive resume includes credits with James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson, and Beyonce. Keyboardist-songwriter Ed Roth is a Grammy-nominee known for his work in jazz, rock, and pop, and a robust resume that includes working with Ringo Starr, Brothers Johnson, Coolio, Shuggie Otis, and Annie Lennox. And drummer-songwriter Franklin Vanderbilt brings savage to the band’s soul with his fatback groove and jazzy nimbleness. Among others, his credits include drumming for legendary Chaka Khan, recording with fusion jazz pioneer Stanley Clarke, and touring worldwide with Lenny Kravitz.

“Once people hear this music, they get really into it,” Robby says. “When the record comes out the connection with the audience will be even stronger.”

Roman Street, named for an old roman street in the Alps where they studied guitar, is an internationally trained instrumental band specializing in improvisational fusion of Classical, Gypsy and Contemporary Jazz, Latin, and Nuevo Flamenco. A departure from the over-produced music that is out there today, they keep it simple—the beautifully organic sound of acoustic instruments played by talented people who love what they are doing. Whether performing as a guitar duo, or with a backing band, Roman Street astounds with music that appeals to fans of many genres.

The title for their new single “It’s All About The Groove” is something that the group’s bass player Jo Jo Morris has always said when talking about what makes people feel music. That saying has always resonated with Roman Street so they decided to use it as the name for their new single. Roman Street will be playing it live in February when they open up for the legendary Gipsy Kings!

Kenny G – Over The Rainbow

Kenny G Innocence album cover

Kenny G has a way with melody. That’s not necessarily a revelation, but more like a huge understatement, and it really comes into focus at this point in Kenny’s amazing career. This is a musician who has sold more than 75 million albums worldwide, owns the best-selling instrumental record of all time with 1992’s 12-times-platinum Breathless, has the number one Christmas record of all time with 1994’s 8-times platinum Miracles, and whose song “Going Home” has, improbably, become the official end-of-work-day anthem in China. At the heart of those achievements is Kenny’s ability to convey deep emotional resonance with his saxophone, a skill never more apparent than on Innocence, his 20th studio album and fifth for Concord Records.

The 12-track project’s theme is lullabies, which have existed for thousands of years not only as a means of soothing babies to sleep but also to impart cultural and familial traditions. “Lullabies are very special to me,” says Kenny, who has been mulling an album with this musical focus for several years and even mentioned the idea in passing in Penny Lane’s acclaimed 2021 HBO documentary on him, Listening to Kenny G. “They hold a special place in my heart. It’s the melodies. They are beautiful and timeless and whenever I hear them, wonderful memories start rushing back to me.”

Listeners will likely experience the same sensation while enjoying Kenny’s versions of “Rock-a-Bye Baby,” Harold Arlen’s “Over the Rainbow,” Richard Rodgers’ “Edelweiss,” and Frederic Chopin’s “Nocturne Op. 9 No. 2” and “Berceuse,” which he purposefully rendered without any interpretive twists and turns. “The problem that often happens when artists record songs with traditional melodies is that they put too many twists on things and they end up making them worse,” he says. “With lullabies, you don’t necessarily need to put much of a twist on them. You just do your thing and at the same time stay true to the melody. My thing is being able to look at a melody and understand how to play it. I’m very lucky that I have that sensibility when it comes to melody. I think that’s also why my Christmas records do so well, and why people tell me they listen to them all year long.”

For example, Kenny says “Edelweiss” may not be considered by some to be a lullaby, but that “it’s in the right tempo for one and has such a great melody. I included it because it’s a song I’ve always enjoyed listening to. And to me it sounds like a lullaby.” As for “Over the Rainbow,” Kenny previously recorded it for his 1999 album Classics in the Key of G, but welcomed the opportunity to give it another shot on Innocence. “I thought I did a pretty good job on the first try, but there was a part missing and it’s something that’s been hanging over my head for a long time,” he says. “I was always wanting to re-record that song and finally got a chance to do it, which was really satisfying.”

However, Innocence is hardly limited to the past. Indeed, Kenny co-wrote seven original songs for the album, propelled by the notion that “a lot of my songs already sound like lullabies even though they’re not labeled as such. I think my natural writing style works out great for creating new original lullabies” he says, although he’s quick to admit that it’s nearly impossible to define what exactly makes a piece of music a lullaby in the first place.

“I know how to write a melody and I can put myself in the right frame of mind to create what I want to create, but even though they’re simple, lullabies are hard to describe in words,” he says. “I practice every morning for three hours, and in those three hours while I was thinking about this record, I started to fool around with melodies. One would hit me and I’d say to myself as I put it on my phone, okay, that’s gonna be a great lullaby.”

Throughout, Kenny’s signature soprano sax uplifts, soothes, and conjures aural nostalgia of the highest order, from the first unaccompanied notes of album opener “Acapella Lullaby” to closer “Studio City Lullaby,” which is a wonderful collaboration with Kenny and close friend, Randy Waldman, and was created in Studio City California. With a meditative piano countermelody underneath, “A Mother’s Lullaby” finds Kenny at his most serene, while “Lullaby Tres” is imbued with a cinematic, bittersweet vibe accented by harp glissandos and an unexpected key modulation.

Kenny also recorded two tenor sax tracks “Tender Lullaby” and “Major Lullaby,” “It’s nice to have the deep rich tones of the tenor sax on this record too. I think these tracks add depth and a slightly darker ‘vibe’ to the record. Even a bit melancholy.”

Helping Kenny flesh out the sound of Innocence were arrangers/composers and longtime collaborators Randy Waldman and William Ross, with several songs eventually being put to tape at the latter’s home studio and others featuring songwriting contributions from both men. Bill Ross’s gorgeous orchestral arrangements were recorded at London’s famed AIR Studios, with Kenny there in person to oversee the recording.

“There was a lot of collaboration on this album, and Randy and Bill were really important,” Kenny says. “Randy is a virtuoso, in addition to being a really good friend. He’s got lots of ideas and he’s always willing to try things. And Bill is the ultimate orchestrator/arranger/composer and it was a true pleasure to work so closely with him on this project. This project would not exist if not for Bill Ross.” Kenny continues, “On many of my past records, we recorded the orchestra in London at Air Studios and we did it via Zoom, but this time I was there in person, so it was quite a thrill to stand in the room and finally shake hands with people I’ve seen on the screens for years. To watch them perform live made me feel very proud to be one of the musicians playing on this album.”

For the last several years, Kenny has taken to the internet with gusto, as new generations of listeners have discovered his music and contemporary hitmakers such as The Weeknd and Jon Batiste have enlisted him for guest appearances on their albums. His posts have become memes and gone viral, as he continues to have fun with the whole idea of being his iconic self.

And while the material from Innocence may not make much sense as part of Kenny’s live show (“unless I’m playing at a nursery school or a private gig at somebody’s house” he jokes), it’s most definitely not just an album for kids. (Although in Kenny’s words. “I’ve already given you the albums that have made the babies, now I give you the album that puts them to sleep!”)

“You can put it on when you want to get into a peaceful frame of mind,” he offers. “Some people will hear the new tracks without thinking about them as lullabies and say they just sound like my original music, and that’s great too. Also, young parents can enjoy this album. It might help them finally get some sleep.”

R&B/jazz singer Erin Stevenson lights up the season with “Christmas Time With You”

Erin-Stevenson-Christmas-Time-With-You-1024x1024

R&B/jazz singer Erin Stevenson has a joyous holiday treat for listeners filled with cinnamon kisses and time spent with loved ones. The Innervision Records artist wrote and produced the finger popping, swinging, bluesy, retro sleigh ride “Christmas Time With You,” a cheerful new single boding to become a seasonal standard. Now available from iTunes, Amazon and other major retailers, “Christmas Time With You” will begin collecting playlist adds on November 27.

All year round, Stevenson radiates the energy and excitement of Christmas morning thus composing and recording her own standard feels apropos. Inherent in her glee is a sense of gratitude, strong sentiments that permeate the single’s lyrics.

“‘Christmas Time With You’ offers a happy slice of real life packaged as a classic Christmas song guaranteed to make you smile and get you in the holiday spirit. It will make you feel a tad bit closer to the ones you love,” said Stevenson who recruited keyboardist Christopher Thomas, guitarist Kay-Ta Matsuno, bassist Keith Eaddy and drummer Arthur Thompson to decorate the festive track.

Stevenson has been working on her sophomore album, “CoverGirl Uncovered,” which is slated to drop next April. She jokes that “Justin is financing the album,” a reference to the breaks she takes from recording to perform with Justin Timberlake, one of the many A-listers she has toured and performed with, including Pharrell Williams, Duran Duran, Nicki Minaj, John Legend, Jennifer Lopez, Janet Jackson, Ciara, Rihanna and Camila Cabello. Her solo recording career has been on an upward trajectory, having most recently peaked at No. 14 on the Billboard chart with the single “Smooth Soul.”

“My career has been taking off and I believe it’s primarily due to my live performances. I don’t take for granted that my band is a critical component to that, which is why I put them on my records and in music videos. I’m happy, Christmas makes me happy, and my band makes me happy. That’s exactly what you get on ‘Christmas Time With You,’” said Stevenson, a force of nature performer who will play with her band on Friday (November 10) at Spaghettini south of Los Angeles.

Hailing from Houston and now based in Southern California, Stevenson debuted as a solo artist in 2006 with the Billboard top 5 dance music single “Sweat.” She dropped her first album, “Naked,” in 2017, paced by the British top 10 single, “Hangin’.” A series of singles followed – “Make It Last Forever,” “You Gotta Be” and “Never Too Much” – the latter of which won Stevenson a People’s Choice Indie Soul Award in 2021.

Although she’s effervescent and jolly, Stevenson knows this time of year can be challenging for others. Her sense of empathy and compassion is why her message in “Christmas Time With You” resonates.

“For some, the holiday season is dreadful because everyone else is so doggone happy. Whether it’s a lack of finances, loneliness, or family problems, some people lose sight of the gifts right in their midst. It’s true, the best gifts in life are free – like time and living in the moment. I’m a strong believer that if you want to be happy, only do things and surround yourself with people who make you happy,” Stevenson said.

Spiritually grounded, Stevenson keeps sight of the true meaning of Christmas by maintaining a humble outlook that reflects her feelings of appreciation.

“Jesus will always be my reason for the season, but that also comes with lots of good food, good wine, and, of course, my family. Anything more is simply a bonus.”

The title “SOFT LIFE” as a general phrase, means “a life without difficulty” and has been used since the mid-1600s. His live performances are very energetic, tasteful, as well as full of humor and entertainment. Matt’s shows are sure to get an audience out of their seats and movin’!

“The story behind the creation of one of my funkiest songs “Nightcrawler” is quite interesting. Once my mentor/producer Martin Blockson and I got the basic chord progression and arrangement down, we started messing around with the melodies. Once we got the melody solidified, we started messing around with the track. We added a bunch of little subliminal sounds, and if you listen carefully, at the beginning of the track there is the sound of crickets in the background.

There are lots of other little things added into the track as well! We really enjoyed putting this one together and it is one of my favorites off of my debut album Soul Assassin.” – Matt Willard

Jeff Ryan – Where There’s Hope

Where There’s Hope

After the events that unfolded on the world stage last week, we could all use hope. Billboard chart-topping saxophonist Jeff Ryan teams with two-time Grammy winner Paul Brown on “Where There’s Hope,” a soothing and uplifting R&B/jazz single released by Woodward Avenue Records that began collecting playlist adds on Monday (October 16).

“Where There’s Hope” builds on the chemistry created between Ryan and Brown during the recording sessions for the saxman’s 2021 collection, “Duality.” From the opening notes, Ryan’s horns – he plays both tenor and soprano saxes on the single – engages in encouraging banter with Brown’s spirited electric guitar. Loosely tethered to a midtempo groove anchored by Gorden Campbell’s drums and Roberto Vally’s bass and percussion, the optimistic and impassioned sax and guitar dialogue is an equitable exchange unfolding amidst inviting melodies and warm harmonies crafted by Mark Etheredge’s keyboards and Shane Theriot’s rhythm guitar.

“Working with Paul always puts one at ease. His playing brought so much life to this track and I’m very proud of the interaction between my sax and his guitar,” said the San Francisco-based Ryan.

Ryan is a very physical sax player, bringing founts of emotion, passion and urgency to his horn work. Whether he’s belting out empowering affirmations on his tenor or dispensing compassionate caresses through his soprano sax, his play on “Where There’s Hope” is lyrically expressive.

“The title really stands for when challenges come into our lives, to look for the positives that are all around us so that we can make a better future. At this point in my career, my goal is to really show the truest image of myself. No matter all the challenges, the goal is to stay true to the exceptional vision and make that a reality,” said Ryan, who wrote “Where There’s Hope” with Brown, Etheredge and Vally.

Ryan’s 2018 debut album, “Embrace,” which paired him with hitmaking producer-songwriter-keyboardist Greg Manning, earned him JazzTrax’s Breakout Artist honors and Smooth Jazz Network’s Debut Artist of the Year title. The Bay Area musician was named Billboard’s Artist of the Year in 2020 and his 2021 single, “Sentimental Soul,” was Billboard’s Song of the Year. The “Duality” album highlights Ryan collaborating with smooth/contemporary jazz royalty – Brown, Manning, multiple Grammy nominee Darren Rahn and 13-time Billboard chart-topping guitarist Adam Hawley. In the five years since his debut, Ryan has already notched five Billboard No. 1 singles. “Where There’s Hope” bodes to continue Ryan’s hot streak.

“Here’s to a better life with a strong focus on passion, love, fitness and finesse.”

Michael Manson – On The Up And Up

Michael Manson cover art

Michael Manson is a talented, school-educated, and experienced musician and music educator. His training is inclusive of intensive work in the Classic, Jazz, Gospel, and R&B genres of music. Also, inclusive of his Christian philosophy and training, giving is a crucial part of his lifestyle. In keeping with this, music as a gift is meant that is meant to serve. Therefore, Michael feels that the gift given to him is to be given back to serve others, specifically his community.

With the release of his previous CD, Thumpin’, Michael Manson joined the ranks of today’s premiere jazz artists.

His first singles, “Outer Drive,” “Sundance,” and “Coming Right At Ya,” reached the top 10 on the R&R Smooth Jazz. Bass master Michael Manson moved from sideman to center stage on his solo debut, The Bottom Line.

His passion and precision are displayed with both unrelenting power and laid-back grace on the album that, he says, “reflects the deepest expression of all I have felt making music for the last twenty 25 years.”

On Michael Manson’s new CD “A Ray of Hope” (2021), he is credited for writing and production. For this album, Michael has collected the who’s who of Smooth Jazz: Najee, Darren Rhan, Jeff Lorber, Nick Colionne, Lin Roundtree, Paul Jackson Jr., Jeff Lorber, and the legendary George Duke, and many more great jazz musicians. This album is an excellent mix of contemporary jazz, R&B, and even a little gospel.

Manson’s association with George Duke ultimately led to the gig of a lifetime. George, the musical director and a featured artist on the Montreux Jazz tour, invited Manson onboard, where he shared the stage with his greatest childhood hero, Al Jarreau, along with David Sanborn, Roberta Flack, and Joe Sample. Manson has shared the stage with Warner Bros. Records artists Larry Carlton, Kirk Whalum, Boney James, Rick Braun, Kenny Garret, George Duke, and Kevin Mahogany. Pal Kirk Whalum said with typical good humor, “After that tour, you could have retired.” But Manson is just getting started. Kirk also included him on his “Hymns In The Garden” album, which was nominated for Best Pop Instrumental Album at the Grammys.

In 2010, after years of working with the best in jazz, Manson and his wife Lana opened a nonprofit music school, the Musical Arts Institute. This endeavor has now served thousands of students and currently has 1200 students enrolled. They serve the far south side of Chicago, where students and families do not have access to or resources to afford high-quality music instruction.

For Michael Manson, love of musical communication, exploration, collaboration, and celebration is clearly what it’s all about. This sophomore release reflects Manson’s unabated passion with joy and inspired artistry: “There are intriguing musical conversations, and I hope the audience shares in that. But it is just great for musicians to communicate in that way. That’s the joy of music. To make great music like that every night, that’s what it’s all about.”

Slim Gambill Light This Candle ARTWORK

Guitarist Slim Gambill’s solo recording career is about to blow up. Rocking his trademark twin braids, Gambill works out on a cool electric jazz guitar, playing dexterous lead and rhythm licks. Hawley decorates the energizing vibe and funky groove with rhythm guitar, Rhodes keyboards, synths and programming. Carnell Harrell enhances the instrumental bed with additional synth shading while the rhythm section comprised of Grammy-winning bassist Mel Brown and percussionist Ramon Yslas (David Sanborn, Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera) is locked.

“The Daft Punk-y groove and the hook remind me of a rocket taking off in some crazy 1970s sci-fi disco fantasy,” laughed the Nashville-based Gambill, who then explained the true meaning of the song title.

“This single is coming out at a pivotal juncture for me. It’s my fifth release and I think my sound is unique to contemporary jazz. It’s been a gradual process and every single has done better and better. It’s time to ‘Light This Candle!” Let’s get this done! I feel like this track is the one that’s gonna take my music over the top, and everything is pointing in that direction, so it’s all systems go,” said Gambill.

“Light This Candle” is the second consecutive single from the Gambill-Hawley team. Although both are graduates of the guitar program at the USC Thornton School of Music, saxophone sensation Mindi Abair introduced them. Earlier this year, Gambill hit the charts hard with the Hawley produced “Heavyweight,” resulting in a top 20 hit on the Billboard and Mediabase charts.

On his collaborative chemistry with Hawley, Gambill said, “You really realize why Adam is who he is. His ideas never, ever hit me as, ‘Yeah, I would have done the same thing.’ It’s really quite the opposite. His ideas add a spark that I never would have thought of and that’s what makes for such a killer musical and co-writing relationship.”

Jeff “Skunk” Baxter – My Place In The Sun

Jeff 'Skunk' Baxter My Place in the Sun cover art

Legendary guitarist Jeff “Skunk” Baxter is having a major impact on smooth jazz radio with his powerful new single, “My Place in the Sun.” The haunting, gripping ballad, which features the sublime lead vocals of Baxter’s onetime Doobie Brothers bandmate Michael McDonald, was the fourth most-added song at the format according to Mediabase, and has already closed out one-third of the panel. “My Place in the Sun” is from Baxter’s recent, first-ever solo album, Speed of Heat(BMG/Renew), a stellar 12-song set that features a host of brilliantly crafted originals co-written by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist and musical partner CJ Vanston, as well as inspired versions of beloved classics.

Along with fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Michael McDonald, the album features guest vocalists and songwriters such as Clint Black, Jonny Lang and Rick Livingstone. With its arresting groove, McDonald’s transfixing vocals and Baxter’s always impeccable guitar playing (he plays two lyrical and evocative solos that absolutely shine), “My Place in the Sun” is a contemporary sound that also recalls the uniquely brilliant artistry the two musicians shared on multiplatinum hit after hit in the Doobie Brothers. “CJ Vanston and I wrote the song with Michael,” Baxter explains. “It was fun because I knew that Michael always thrived on call and response, so I thought a little bit about how Rod Stewart and Jeff Beck worked together. I wanted to do something in that vein, and it came off great. You can really hear our chemistry on the track. ”The track has earned significant praise from critics. Rock and Blues Muse wrote, “Their call-and-response interplay is sublime, and the mood they create will keep you smooth and groovy all night long.”

Michael Lington – South Bay

Michael Lington South Bay cover art

The highly anticipated follow-up to his Top 5 Billboard, #1 RadioWave single “Moon Goddess,” Michael Lington’s “South Bay” is a playful and free-spirited, spontaneous feeling homage to the casual, lighthearted energy of the coastal region of Los Angeles where the veteran saxophonist used to live and wrote the song before moving to his current home in San Diego County.

Co-written by Lington, Grammy-winning guitarist/producer Paul Brown and guitarist Shane Theriot (and produced by Brown), “South Bay” has a sassy, strutting sax melody over an edgy light funk crunch groove, offering an infectious coolness punctuated by waves of Lington’s trademark soaring emotion. While mixing the track, Brown – whose fiery electric guitar solo is a highlight – told the saxophonist that he felt “South Bay” could become a signature tune for him.

Lington debuted “South Bay” live at Brian Culbertson’s Napa Valley Getaway – and instantly inspired everyone to get up and dance. It’s yet another example of the saxophonist fulfilling his mission to be relatable, connect with people and leave everyone with a feeling of joy.

Boney James – Memphis

Web

Detour, on Concord Records, is chart-topping jazz/R&B sax player Boney James’ 18th studio album. Appropriately titled, this latest album is a subtle stylistic turn that builds on the commercial success of 2020’s Solid, his highest charting release ever on the pop charts, peaking in the Top 10 on the Billboard 200.

Like Solid, Detour provides a welcome respite from an increasingly foreboding world filled with political strife. It’s a trip through James’ distinctive contemporary jazz/R&B landscapes, layered in quicksilver watercolor images and cinematic set pieces. Detour represents the next extension of Boney James’ trademark blend of genres which includes blues, soul, roots, classical, art-pop and hip-hop.

Detour was recorded largely at Boney’s L.A. home studio in his backyard (live drums and percussion were tracked at venerable Sunset Sound), with both regular collaborators like former band guitarist, now an in-demand writer/producer, Jairus “J-Mo” Mozee (Anderson.Paak, Nicki Minaj, Anthony Hamilton) and hot newcomer BeatsMadeByFresh aka Christian Frazier. Among the other musicians on the album are keyboardist Tim Carmon (Eric Clapton), longtime drummer Omari Williams and bassist Alex Al, renowned percussionist Lenny Castro, and guitarists Big Mike Hart and Paul Jackson Jr.

During his 30-year career, Boney has earned four Grammy nominations (“I’m not gonna lie… I’d still love a statue,” he says), two NAACP Image Award nominations and a Soul Train Award, while a dozen of his albums have landed at #1 on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Album chart. His collaborators in the past include a who’s who of R&B and soul: Raheem DeVaughn, Faith Evans, George Benson, George Duke, Dwele, Al Jarreau, Philip Bailey, Anthony Hamilton, Jaheim, Eric Benét, Dave Hollister, Stokley Williams, Kenny Lattimore and Angie Stone.

“What drives me is my love of making music and my desire for people to hear what I’ve made,” he says. “I still love the communal aspect of playing live. There’s nothing else like it.” – Boney James

Art Ruprecht – If Necessary, Use Words

385310488_10228713664520395_1423222203704728351_n

In this noisy era of incessant broadcast media coverage and social media clamoring, one may long for communication by action instead of words. And since many experts believe that the larger part of communication is nonverbal, living authentically through action may be a desirable goal. Those are some of the thoughts contemporary jazz guitarist Art Ruprecht contemplated when writing and producing his rousing new Flame Productions single, “If Necessary, Use Words.”

The second single from Ruprecht’s “New Every Day” album is a guitar and saxophone duet featuring Fred Middlekauff on tenor sax. The track was swiftly added to dozens of smooth/contemporary jazz playlists across the country.

Storming out of the gate, Ruprecht issues gregarious electric jazz guitar leads and soulful rhythmic riffs. He volleys playfully with Middlekauff’s fervent horn forays as the duo builds to crescendo while trading impassioned solos. Jeff Tobler’s EVI and Martin Klein’s keyboards thicken the harmonies tethered to the rhythm track constructed by Joshua West’s bass and Andy Summerfield’s drums.

“The title for the single comes from a quote attributed to St. Francis of Assisi. ‘Preach the gospel at all times and if necessary, use words.’ No one knows for sure if he really said it, but nevertheless it is worthy advice. Actions speak louder than words. When we radiate joy and happiness, people notice,” said Ruprecht, a St. Louis native whose fretwork is influenced by Joe Pass, Pat Martino, Pat Metheny, Larry Carlton, Robben Ford and George Benson.

Ruprecht says that “If Necessary, Use Words” mirrors the journey of life.

“The first verse takes the listener through some ups and downs as we all experience in life. It leads to a redemptive chorus in the second part of the song. These parts are repeated with experimentation – our improv solos – leading into the wilderness part of the journey heard during the bridge. Finally, we emerge at a higher level, heard via a change in key, and coast from there to the promised land,” explained Ruprecht.

Ruprecht brings a unique and diverse background to his recording artistry. He’s a multi-instrumentalist who started on the drum kit. Falling in love with bluegrass inspired him to learn violin, mandolin and eventually, guitar. He debuted in 2008 with the “At the End of the Day” album, which was heard frequently on the Weather Channel. His “Cast Your Care” ranked No. 22 on the SmoothJazz.com Top 100 albums for 2019. Ruprecht’s first album in three years, “New Every Day” contains fifteen of his original compositions, including the first single, “Peace Meal,” another guitar and sax offering spotlighting Middlekauff that garnered national airplay last spring.

Ilya Serov – Champagne Sky

ILYA SEROV Champagne Sky cover art

Award-winning trumpeter /singer /guitarist /band leader Ilya Serov has a passion for jazz that knows no bounds. A talented young musician with an old soul, Ilya brings an infusion of imagination, vision and energy to the many shades of America’s original musical art form. Possessing both chops and charisma, his live performances and recordings have attracted a solid following among jazz fans and seasoned musicians alike.

Ilya’s experiences on the jazz scene have recently led him to expand his creative interests in a significant new direction that blends smooth jazz with elements of soul and R&B. In November 2021 he released his third studio album, Just Friends, which features platinum-selling saxophonist Dave Koz and other award-winning artists: keyboardist Greg Manning, saxophonist Alex Hahn, vocalist Matt Cusson and guitarist Kay-Ta Matsuno. The album is dedicated to one of America’s most iconic jazz trumpet players and singers, Chet Baker, and is titled after Baker’s classic jazz standard of the same name. Baker was the inspiration that pushed Ilya to begin finding his own voice in the jazz world. As his own style matured, Ilya wondered what Baker, with his musical genius, would sound like as a contemporary jazz artist today. With Just Friends, Ilya strives to show the connection between several generations of jazz.

Along with his renditions of Chet Baker’s most recognizable tunes from the Great American Songbook, Ilya’s considerable composition skills are displayed in several original contemporary tunes inspired by those standards. Just Friends features 11 songs, and the first three singles on the album are Serov’s original compositions. “Chillin’,” his first original single, was composed and released in 2020 during the isolation and introspection brought on by the global pandemic. “Heat” (featuring Dave Koz) and “Ironic” were both released in 2021. Both tracks received considerable international airplay, and “Heat” made it on the Billboard Top 30 Smooth Jazz Chart. In November 2021, Ilya was nominated as Breakout Artist of the Year by Smooth Jazz Network.

Christian de Mesones – Don Pedro

don-pedro-cover

Contemporary Jazz recording artist Christian de Mesones has released his latest single, “Don Pedro”, now available for streaming and purchase on all major music platforms and on the artist’s website. This long-awaited, intensely emotional ballad is another skillful representation of de Mesones’ composing mastery, highlighting the heartfelt delivery of Christian’s unique and beautifully crafted bass guitar and saxophone melodies with soulful, Latin flair.

Featuring veteran saxophonist Jaared Arosemena (known for his work with Peter White and his Trippin ‘N’ Rhythm Records release, “Manhattan Nights”) and vocal embellishments by the renowned David Blamires that create an atmospheric countermelody, this arrangement becomes a three-way conversation that cannot be ignored. “Don Pedro” is further boosted by producer Maurice Chevalier’s keyboards and drums, as well as Eddie Montalvo’s pristinely placed percussion. This single was also mixed and mastered by Chevalier.

This moody, poignant ballad is a tribute to de Mesones’ father, who passed away on September 23, 2012. “I wrote this song shortly after my dad died, and performed it live for the first time in 2013 with Jaared as the featured saxophonist,” de Mesones said. “I was completely blown away by his performance, but unfortunately, he wasn’t available to record at that time. I spent years looking for the right instrumentation and structure, and the song just never felt quite right.” The stars finally aligned, and de Mesones was able to recapture the magic from that 2013 performance. “Jaared was just the right person for this particular song. His interpretation of the melody truly captures the spirit of my father.” When asked about David Blamires’ contributions to the song, de Mesones said, “In my humble opinion, Blamires’ “Deep as the Midnight Sea” is one of the greatest songs ever composed and was among my favorites when it was played on the CD 101.9 Radio Smooth Jazz format. I simply reached out to him, and he was graciously willing to lend his talents to this deeply personal composition.”

“I chose this release date to commemorate my 11th year without my dad,” de Mesones stated. “My relationship with my father was complicated. He didn’t necessarily support my musical aspirations, yet he paid for me to attend music school. Later in life, he gave me the preeminent advice of my career – to surround myself with those who I aspire to emulate.” de Mesones has done just that, working with the top artists in the DMV, and collaborating with musical legends like Bob James.

“I believe he sees the success I’ve achieved, and I’m so grateful for the gift he gave me before he passed – redemption, freedom, acceptance, and much sought after approval, which most sons yearn for from their fathers.”

“You Only Live Twice” is de Mesones’ follow up to his debut solo project, “They Call Me Big New York” and is slated for release November 10, 2023. This album features “Don Pedro”, as well as his previous charting singles “Sexy Beast”, “Sweetnight”, “In His Vision”, and his #1 Billboard smash hit for 2021 “Hispanica” featuring Bob James. At press time, the title track “You Only Live Twice” has reached the top 50 on Billboard and Media Base charts and #33 on RadioWave.

###

Christian “Big New York” de Mesones has been playing bass guitar for over 40 years. He graduated from the Bass Institute of Technology (now the Musician’s Institute) in Hollywood, California and has been part of musical groups all over the country, including bands out of Hawaii, Hollywood, New York City, and Richmond, Virginia. de Mesones has created bands and led all-star groups that have performed at the Capital Jazz and Lake Arbor Jazz Festivals in Maryland, the 2 Street Festival in Richmond, VA, Blues Alley Supper Club in Washington, DC, the legendary Birchmere Music Hall in Alexandria, VA, Spaghettini in Seal Beach, CA, and the world-famous Catalina Island Jazz Trax Festival. Christian makes his Jazz Legacy debut this November in Hampton, Virgina, a multi-day festival featuring the biggest names in Smooth Jazz.

Darren Horn – Nairobi

Mr. Horn cover art

Darren Horn started playing professionally as a teenager in Detroit with singer Cortez Harris, who was a member of popular R&B/funk band Al Hudson & One Way.

After some years away from the business, Horn resumed his career in the 2000s writing, producing and performing with gospel singer AnnaMaria and has since made it back to the charts with his Smooth Jazz Dual Horn and Holland. Darren has his single due to be released in September 2023 followed by his EP.

Horn is releasing “Nairobi” and The Horn Connection EP on the heels of his 2022 debut album Summertime, whose popular, vocal-driven title track single was played on smooth jazz and soft rock radio and internet stations throughout the U.S. and Europe. Horn’s recording and release of the song was the fulfillment of a promise to its composer, Reginald Davison, onetime lead singer of the Axe Band who had also worked with major R&B artists, including Cherrelle. Davison was ill at the time. Fortunately, Davison heard “Summertime” over the airwaves before he passed.

“Nairobi,” an infectious and spirited mid-tempo ballad that showcases Mr. Horn’s sparkling piano magic and features dynamic solos by Billboard #1 smooth jazz hit makers, guitarist Nils and flutist Ragan Whiteside.

While the title “Nairobi” may inspire thoughts and images of African-related inspirational vibes, Horn in fact named it after a colorful character nicknamed Nairobi on Netflix’s popular Spanish crime drama Money Heist. “Nairobi’ is intended to be uplifting, like a fight song, the gist of it conveying victory.

The Horn Connection will include four other tracks by Horn featuring collaborations with various artists. These include the whimsical and romantic yet grooved-out original “I’ll Be There for You” and fresh, keyboard-centric re-imaginings of some of his favorite R&B and contemporary jazz songs – the Chuck Mangione classic “Feels So Good,” Stephanie Mills’ “I Feel Good All Over” and Earth, Wind & Fire’s brassy funk jam “In The Stone.”

Roberto Vally – Last Flight Home

LastFlightHome

For a journeyman musician like bassist Roberto Vally, who has been touring for 44 years, there’s nothing like that last flight home as the sun sets at the end of a concert tour. And for Vally, that trip home could be anywhere in the world his family resides: from West Africa to Norway, from France to his Los Angeles residence. The destination really doesn’t matter. What does is re-uniting with loved ones. Vally’s new Woodward Avenue Records single, “Last Flight Home,” which began collecting playlist adds on Monday (September 11), captures the evocative emotional journey through warm melody, rich harmony and a robust groove.

Vally’s traveling companions on “Last Flight Home” are his cowriters: two-time Grammy nominated pianist David Benoit and Jeff Carruthers (Paul Brown, Boney James, Dave Koz). The bass player produced the track that features his pliable and lyrical bass lines along with scatted vocalizations. The flight team is bolstered by lush tenor sax embellishments added to the chorus by Billboard chart-topping tenor saxophonist Jeff Ryan and a nimble acoustic piano solo from Benoit, a seminal contemporary jazz artist who has a long history of collaborating with Vally. Another frequent collaborator, two-time Grammy winner Paul Brown mixed the track.

“Really everyone who plays on this track, I have extensive history of not only recording with them but having shared many chart successes together. The newest would be my labelmate, Jeff Ryan, and I just love the way he plays and knew that Jeff would bring something special to ‘Last Flight Home.’ And he did just that. I have many fond memories of playing and recording with David (Benoit). He wrote his part for this song, which really helped bring the entire thing to life,” said Vally, who will flank Benoit during the piano man’s famed “A Charlie Brown Christmas Tour” this coming holiday season.

Brooklyn-born Vally was classically trained in the bass and music theory. He attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts (made famous in “Fame”) and The Juilliard School briefly during and after high school. His versatile repertoire spanning classical, jazz, Latin, funk, rock, hip-hop, pop, reggae and soul music was developed and honed through international touring during which he accompanied an array of jazz, R&B and pop greats. After being invited to join Spyro Gyra when he was just 27 years old, Vally then toured the globe with Michael Franks. >From there, he served long tenures as musical director for Diane Shuur and Randy Crawford and spent 29 years playing in Bobby Caldwell’s band. Vally has played recording dates with George Benson, Al Jarreau, Patti Austin, Jeffrey Osborne, Boney James, and many others.

More than a premier sideman and a first-call session player, Vally started writing songs for members of the contemporary jazz royalty who are his contemporaries. He’s penned Billboard number one hits for Brown, Bob James, Kirk Whalum and Richard Elliot. He’s also written tunes for Larry Carlton, Boney James, Rick Braun, Euge Groove, Carol Albert, Marion Meadows and Najee.

Using his lyrically expressive horn to pay homage to his hometown, R&B-jazz saxophonist Shawn Raiford teamed up with Grammy-winning producer Derek “DOA” Allen (Lionel Richie, Janet Jackson, Tyrese) to create a musical love letter to the Bay Area city located thirty miles north of San Francisco. Written by Raiford, Allen, Ashley Jemison and Eddie Mininfield (Prince, Sheila E., Aretha Franklin), “Vallejo” will begin collecting playlist adds on Monday (September 4).

“Vallejo” is the third single released from Raiford’s forthcoming sophomore album, “The Next Step,” which is slated to drop early next year with Allen manning the producer’s console. And this one is personal.

“The only place that felt like home, the only place I felt like I belonged was in Vallejo,” said Raiford, who bounced around a bit while growing up, having attended four elementary schools, three junior high schools and two high schools.

“I was raised by my grandparents in Vallejo, California and this song is a tribute to a city that I speak of everywhere I go. There’s not a place that I go that I don’t mention that I’m from Vallejo. I’m really proud of that city. There’s just something about it.”

The warm melodies and intimate harmonies evocative of Raiford’s ardor for Vallejo float atop a soulful midtempo groove. His sax deftly balances his passion and intensity with the beauty and grace of his affection for the city. The track has an edge reflective of the signature sounds known to emerge from the Bay Area music scene.

“Me and my producer, DOA, came up with a combination of The Gap Band’s ‘Oops Upside Your Head’ and Brent Jones’s ‘I’m In Your City,’ but giving it the feel that Vallejo should have. It’s one of those songs that I believe that people when they get done listening to it are going to put it on play again. You can put it on in the backyard…people just having fun. It’s one of those joints. It’s really a nice song,” said Raiford, a motivational and genuinely exuberant artist who uses music to preach and teach what is possible when you believe in yourself, take action and follow your passion while being of service to others.

An award-winning entertainer with his band The Shawn Raiford Experience, Raiford has been opening shows this year for R&B singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Chuckii Booker. Over the years, he’s opened for or performed with Teddy Riley, Yolanda Adams, Freddie Jackson, Pete Escovedo, Eric Darius and Jeff Ryan. Tonight, Raiford will open September with a show in Pittsburg, CA and close the month with a performance at the Night of Elegance benefit concert with Jay King (Club Nouveau) in Sacramento on September 30.

The yearlong build up to “The Next Step” began last January when Raiford released the sensual single “Forever.” Momentum continued to grow in May with the release of his version of the four-time Grammy-winning hit, “Leave The Door Open.” But at every show he’s played this year, during every interview he’s given, and over and over again on his social media, Raiford has talked about “Vallejo,” and just how special this song is to him.

“I love going back to Vallejo just to look and see how it’s changed, but one thing never changes. It’s the city I call home and will always love. In an everchanging world, Vallejo is the city I hope will always love me the way that I love it.”
