Smooth Jazz And Wine – Keel & Curley Winery

Keel and Curley Winery was started in spring of 2003 in the kitchen of founder and owner, Joe Keel. Keel, a central Florida blueberry farmer wanted to find something to do with his end of crop blueberries. As in most produce farming, once the market price reaches a price which is lower than harvest and sale commissions, farms stop harvesting their crops. At this time in the season, there are still a lot of quality blueberries on the bushes. So Keel asked himself, “what can I do with this perfectly good fruit, to use it in a productive way and not waste it? Jellies, jams, blueberry pies? No!”

Keel decided blueberry wine would be interesting to dabble with in the family farm house kitchen. He started that spring of 2003 with 10 gallons of blueberry wine. The wine came out so-so, but drinkable. So he made 10 more gallons and it got better each time. So was the beginning of a company he started with production of over 20,000 cases of quality wines that the company produces to this day.

Keel and Curley Winery, produces three types of Blueberry wines, each with a very distinct taste. The first is a sweet wine, the second, a semi-dry or semi-sweet wine, and the third, a dry wine. All three wines are made from 100% blueberries.

In July, 2011, Keel & Curley debuted two new wines – Dry Blackberry and Sweet Blackberry. Both are made with 100% blackberries.

This winery is also the place for smooth jazz music.  Next group will be the Robert Harris Band. This formation is one of the premier Jazz / R&B groups in central Florida. Robert has performed at several National Jazz Festivals and Concerts with his central Florida based group and plays at least a dozen Jazz festivals in the state each year.

Smooth Jazz And Wine – Kokopelli Winery and Bistro

He is distinguished by his hump back and flute, but his legend is still being deciphered by all who read about him. Kokopelli is a mythical character of many attributions. He was known as a traveler who played his flute for the villagers to hear. He was a story teller to the villagers and would tell them of his great travels. He was a fertility god because whenever he came to town women who wanted to bear fruit were suddenly fruitful. He was also known as being an agriculture god that he bore a seed sack (distinguishing his humpback) and that he was the bearer of a green thumb. Everyone has their own beliefs to each legend; however, the one that helped down pick the name was….well all of them.

When Don was looking to produce the first batch of wine he knew that he needed a name. He wanted something that was catchy that was South Western with an Italian flair. This is when he and Carol came up with the idea of Kokopelli. Don found that when he started researching that he had picked the absolute best name for the winery.

“I enjoyed all of the different legends that Kokopelli had, but the way I see it they really are all one legend,” Don said, “Each legend also played a part in what we were trying to accomplish through our winery.”

Since the winery was so far away Don and Carol wanted people to know they were coming they didn’t have a flute to play; however, they did have great wine to share. Don and Carol had also had an amazing adventure growing, harvesting, and producing the grapes that they also had great stories to tell of their experience. Now Don was definitely no fertility god; however, all the ladies were quite fond of him. “It just comes with the job and being so handsome,” Don says while Carol looks on and laughs. Probably the most truthful legend of all that fits Don and Carol is the agriculture god. With the support of family and friends they now bore green thumbs for growing and producing grapes.

So whatever legend you may choose, enjoy it while you have a great glass of Kokopelli wine (we think Kokopelli had something to do with it)! There’s smooth jazz, Latin jazz, swing jazz, and other types, sometimes crossing over into each other and into other categories of music. Kokopelli Winery is Arizona’s largest and most decorated winery.

Smooth Jazz And Wine – Vino Piazza Winery

Spend the day at this converted 1940s distillery and explore the nooks and crannies, plazas and courtyards, wine-tasting rooms and food vendors that make up this most unusual visitors’ center.

Vino Piazza, translated from Italian, means “the wine plaza”. Twelve wineries are represented here, and are owned and operated independently, each with their own unique approach to winemaking. The spaces themselves are worth the investigation, as some reside in the old “vat rooms” while others are in the ancient boiler rooms.

The landlords are the owners of the Olde Lockeford Winery, and they also have a very worthwhile fossil and minerals exhibit, including giant research-quality caste replicas of a Tyrannosaurus Rex and a Triceratops. There is plenty to explore and plenty of wine available to taste. Each winery has its own tasting schedule.

Sax And The City with Jessy J, Marion Meadows and Paul Taylor is coming to the city of Lockeford, CA this weekend,
Saturday, June 9, 2012 7:00 pm. Taste the wine and enjoy the music.
