Smooth Jazz and Fine Dining – Blues Alley

Blues Alley, founded in 1965, is a jazz dinner-and-nightclub in an alley off Wisconsin Avenue in Washington, D.C.’s Georgetown neighborhood. As of 2008, exclusively jazz musicians are booked into Blues Alley for approximately 360 nights out of the year.

This is a high acclaimed venue. Blues Alley seems to keep music at it’s center and everything else revolves around that. Autographed head shots adorn the walls of the bar area of the jazz greats that have played over the years. It is such an intimate setting, which is exactly how this place was designed to be. Most shows have two seatings.  Dimly lit, brick walls, tight seating, small stage up front.

The sound system is well run and balanced, making for an excellent listening experience. Blues Alley audiences are typically well versed in jazz, making for delightful company before the performance and respectful listening during the performance– which is only appropriate for the top flight talent the club regularly books.

Food at Blues Alley is basically Cajun and steak– think creole, jambalaya, blackened fish and an assortment of pastas. From Sarah Vaughan’s Filet Mignon to Phyllis Hyman’s Stuffed Shrimp there is enough choice.

Smooth Jazz artists performing in this venue are David Benoit, Jeff Bradshaw, Greg Karukas, Dee Lucas, Tony Exum Jr., Karen Briggs, Chieli Minucci, Rocco Ventrella, Walter Beasley, Kim Waters and more to come. You know what you get!
